Byways Program
**The Pennsylvania Byways program is currently being restructured. If you have interest in designating a byway, please email Jacqueline Koons-Felion or at 717-787-6388.**
The Pennsylvania (PA) Byways program includes 21 designated PA Byways, one Forestry Byway, and three Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) National Scenic Byways (NSB). The Pennsylvania program parallels FHWA's NSB Program, but does not use "scenic" in its title, recognizing that many roadways exemplify more than purely scenic qualities. PennDOT designates Pennsylvania Byways at the request of local communities seeking to highlight roadways with cultural, historical, recreational, archaeological, scenic, and natural qualities.
PennDOT's mission is to support communities and local governments in achieving byway designations and to assist with local planning efforts to maintain byway resource qualities, to protect and preserve visual impacts, to educate residents and visitors, to promote tourism, and to enhance economic development potential throughout the Commonwealth.
