Carbon Nanotubes Additives for Structural and Highway Concrete

Purpose:  The purpose of this research project is to evaluate the use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in concrete and pavement to increase the density, tensile strength, durability, abrasion resistance, and shrinkage reduction for structural and pavement concrete used by PennDOT.

Anticipated Outcomes

Anticipated outcomes of this research project include results detailing the material properties and the estimated life cycle costs for both concrete mixtures with and without CNTs.  Recommendations will then be provided for the feasibility of PennDOT incorporating CNTs into concrete mixtures as well as any potential benefits or disadvantages.
