Project Overview

The Neville Island Bridge Project (SR 79-A61) is located in Neville Township, Robinson Township, and Glenfield Borough, Allegheny County. The project includes structural steel repairs, full structure painting, bearing and deck joint replacements, deck repairs and overlays, bridge barrier repair, substructure concrete work, and drainage improvements.  The project also includes concrete roadway reconstruction, guide rail replacement, and preservation work on four sign structures. Additionally, preservation work will occur on the I-79 bridge over Deer Run Road, north of the Neville Island Bridge.  Motorists will see ramp closures and single-lane and shoulder closures in each direction on I-79 during daylight off-peak and overnight hours. Other traffic impacts include four northbound weekend closures in 2021 and four southbound weekend closures in 2022. The overall project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023.

PennDOT District 11 is announcing the long-term closure of the ramps from Route 65 and Deer Run Road to southbound I-79 at the Neville Island Bridge in Glenfield Borough, Allegheny County will begin Wednesday, January 18 weather permitting.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, the ramps that carry traffic from Route 65 in both directions and Deer Run Road to southbound I-79 will close to traffic continuously through early mid-February as crews conduct paint containment removal work. All ramp traffic will be detoured.

  • From northbound and southbound Route 65, follow the signs to northbound I-79 toward Erie

  • Turn on to Kilbuck Street

  • From Kilbuck Street, take the ramp to northbound I-79

  • Turn left onto Mt. Nebo Road

  • Turn left onto the ramp to southbound I-79

  • Follow southbound I-79 back to the Neville Island Bridge

Posted Detour – Deer Run Road ramp to Southbound I-79

  • Follow Deer Run Road eastbound past the closed ramp

  • Turn left onto Kilbuck Street

  • From Kilbuck Street, take the ramp to northbound I-79

  • From northbound I-79, take the Mt. Nebo (Exit 68) off-ramp

  • Turn left onto Mt. Nebo Road

  • Turn left onto the ramp to southbound I-79

  • Follow southbound I-79 back to the Neville Island Bridge

  • End detour

Alternate Detour – Northbound and Southbound Route 65 ramps to Southbound I-79

  • From Route 65, turn onto the Sewickley Bridge

  • Turn left onto Route 51 and follow through Coraopolis

  • Take the ramp to southbound I-79

  • End detour

The closing of the ramps will allow the contractor to safely close the ramp acceleration lane and shoulder on the Neville Island Bridge in the southbound direction. The removal of the metal pans as part of the overhead suspension paint containment system needs to be completed in the daylight hours for the safety of workers and motorists.

Off-duty uniformed police officers will be staged at various locations along the detour route.

PennDOT District 11 is announcing the final southbound weekend closure on the I-79 Neville Island Bridge in Glenfield Borough and Robinson and Neville townships, Allegheny County, will occur Friday night, September 23 through Monday morning, September 26 weather permitting.

A full closure of the I-79 Neville Island Bridge in the southbound direction will occur from approximately 9 p.m. Friday night, September 23 continuously through 5 a.m. Monday morning, September 26 as crews conduct deck and concrete pavement repairs, bridge painting, and steel repairs.

To allow the work to occur, all southbound traffic will be detoured. Beginning at approximately 8 p.m. Friday night, the Pennsylvania State Police will begin a slow roll of southbound I-79 traffic at the Mt. Nebo (Exit 68) interchange and assist the contractor with reducing the roadway to a single lane of traffic between the Mt. Nebo and Emsworth/Sewickley exits. At approximately 9 p.m. Friday night, another slow roll of southbound I-79 traffic will occur from Mt. Nebo interchange. The police and contractor will guide all traffic to the detour route.

A full closure of the I-79 Neville Island Bridge in the southbound direction will occur from approximately 9 p.m. Friday night, August 19 continuously through 5 a.m. Monday morning, August 22 as crews conduct deck and concrete pavement repairs, bridge painting, and steel repairs.

Single-lane restrictions in both directions on the I-79 Neville Island Bridge will occur Friday night at 8 p.m. continuously through Monday morning at 6 a.m. each weekend through late October.  Work will only occur in the northbound direction this weekend, Friday, June 17 through Monday morning, June 20. Crews will conduct bridge deck repair work.

PennDOT District 11 is announcing overnight lane restrictions on the I-79 Neville Island Bridge in Neville Township, Allegheny County, will begin Monday night, June 6 weather permitting.

Overnight single-lane restrictions will occur as needed on the I-79 Neville Island Bridge nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through late October. Crews will conduct bridge deck repair work.

PennDOT District 11 is announcing northbound lane restrictions on the I-79 Neville Island Bridge in Glenfield Borough and Robinson and Neville townships, Allegheny County, will occur Friday night, June 11 through Monday morning, June 14 weather permitting.

Northbound Interstate 79 on the Neville Island Bridge over the Ohio River will be reduced to a single-lane of traffic from 8 p.m. Friday night continuously through 6 a.m. Monday morning. Crews will conduct latex modified concrete placement on the bridge deck shoulder and roadway. No restrictions will occur in the southbound direction.

Motorists should expect delays during peak travel times.

PennDOT District 11 is announcing the long-term closure of the ramp from Grand Avenue to northbound I-79 at the Neville Island Bridge in Neville Township, Allegheny County, will begin Monday, April 26 weather permitting.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, the ramp that carries traffic from Grand Avenue to northbound I-79 will close to traffic continuously through mid-November as crews conduct concrete deck and barrier repairs, latex overlay, and bridge painting operations. All ramp traffic will be detoured.  Additionally, the right acceleration lane from the ramp to northbound I-79 on the Neville Island Bridge will close to traffic.

  • Cross the Ohio River via the Fleming Park Bridge

  • Turn right onto northbound Route 51 (Robinson Boulevard) toward Coraopolis

  • Turn left onto the ramp to northbound I-79

  • From westbound Grand Avenue, cross the Ohio River via the Coraopolis Bridge

  • Turn right onto northbound Route 51 (4th Avenue)

  • Turn left onto Montour Street Extension

  • Turn left onto southbound Route 51 (5th Avenue)

  • Continue southbound on Route 51 (5th Avenue becomes State Avenue)

  • Turn right onto the ramp to northbound I-79 toward Erie

PennDOT District 11 is announcing lane restrictions on the I-79 Neville Island Bridge in Glenfield Borough and Robinson and Neville townships, Allegheny County, will begin Monday, March 1 weather permitting.

Single-lane restrictions in each direction on the I-79 Neville Island Bridge over the Ohio River will occur weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Monday, March 15 as crews conduct paint containment rigging work. Additionally, two lanes in each direction will be restricted as needed on the I-79 Neville Island Bridge weeknights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Tuesday, March 16.

PennDOT District 11 is announcing daylight lane restrictions on the I-79 Neville Island Bridge in Glenfield Borough and Robinson and Neville townships, Allegheny County, will begin Thursday, August 27 weather permitting.

Single-lane restrictions in each direction will occur weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the I-79 Neville Island Bridge over the Ohio River as needed through the duration of the project. Overnight lane restrictions and long-term shoulder closures are anticipated to begin in early September. Additional details will be provided in advance of the restriction implementation.
