Project Overview

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is advancing the Commercial Street Bridge Replacement Project.  The project is located within the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and provides travel along I-376 which is commonly known as the Parkway East.  The project resides between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and the Braddock Avenue Interchange along I-376 and spans over Nine Mile Run, Frick Park, and Commercial Street.

The project consists of the full replacement of the existing Commercial Street Bridge, on the existing I-376 alignment, with an Arched Delta Frame Structure utilizing Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) Techniques.  The proposed Arched Delta Frame Structure will be erected just south of the existing Commercial Street Bridge on temporary foundations and will be slid onto the existing alignment once demolition of the existing bridge has occurred.  In addition to the full replacement of the existing bridge the project will include replacement of two existing sign structures, installation of a new soldier pile and lagging retaining wall, re-installation of ITS facilities, minor approach roadway widening to tie into the new bridge deck, and other miscellaneous work.

Traffic restrictions during construction will utilize a combination of short-term flagging, short-term shoulder and lane closures, long-term shoulder closures, and the temporary full closure of I-376, Commercial Street, and the Nine Mile Run Trail.

Thank you to all who participated in helping us pick the winning color, "Greenfield Green" for the aesthetic treatment of the Commercial Street bridge.
