PennDOT Issues Update on Valley Street Resurfacing Project

05/17/2023

Lewistown, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) gave an update on its highway resurfacing project on Route 1005 (Valley Street) in Lewistown Borough and Derry Township, Mifflin County. Work during this phase consists of drainage improvements and highway restoration between the intersections of Walnut and Dorcas streets that will improve the ride quality and extend the life of the roadway.

Starting Monday, May 22, the contractor will close the southbound lane of Valley Street between the intersections of Walnut and Dorcas streets. Southbound traffic will follow a detour using Route 1017 (South Walnut Street), Route 3003 (Logan/Chestnut Street), and Dorcas Street back to Valley Street. The northbound lane heading toward Route 22/Electric Avenue will remain open. On-street parking will be prohibited along the open northbound lane within the construction area during this construction phase.

Detour signage along Route 22 also directs drivers to bypass the Walnut Street exit, continue to the East Charles Street exit, and follow Route 3002 (East Charles Street) to Dorcas Street and Dorcas back to Valley Street.

PennDOT anticipates this traffic pattern remaining in place until mid-August and urges drivers to expect short travel delays and build extra time into their travel schedules. PennDOT also advises drivers to exercise caution and to be alert for construction vehicles making sudden stops. PennDOT also warns against following construction vehicles into the closed lane as they deliver the material.

Drivers of non-commercial vehicles familiar with the area may choose alternate routes if desired. Detour maps are available on the project page at www.penndot.pa.gov/Mifflin-Juniata.

Overall work on this project includes roadway reconstruction, building a soldier pile and lagging retaining wall, drainage improvements, installation of sidewalks, curbing and ADA-compliant ramps, pavement markings, and miscellaneous items. It will improve the ride quality on a deteriorated surface and extend the life of nearly a mile of highway between Ort Valley Road and the Five Points intersection in Lewistown Borough and Derry Township. Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College, PA, is the contractor on this $5.4 million job, which will carry over into the 2024 construction season. All work is weather dependent.
