A weekend detour for the temporary closure of Route 322 will be in effect from approximately 9:00 PM on Friday, May 14, 2021 until 6:00 AM on Monday May 17, 2021 (alternate weather dates of May 21, 2021 until May 24, 2021). During this time, Route 322 will be closed in both directions beneath the Route 222 overpass to allow for PennDOT's contractor to complete paving, striping, and signal work and facilitate the conversion of the interchange into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). Motorists are advised to use alternate routes. Signed detour routes will be posted for both directions of Route 322. Motorists heading eastbound on Route 322 will utilize the existing ramp to southbound Route 222, the adjacent interchange at Route 772, and northbound Route 222 to return to Route 322. Motorists heading westbound on Route 322 will utilize the existing ramp to northbound Route 222, the adjacent interchange at Colonel Howard Boulevard (Route 1040), and southbound Route 222 to return to Route 322. A Weekend Detour Map can be found in the resources section of the project website.
Motorists are also advised of the upcoming conversion of the interchange to a DDI configuration. Upon completion of work during the weekend detour, Route 322 will reopen and permanently operate in the DDI configuration using two crossover traffic signals and new/reconstructed interchange ramps to facilitate movements between Route 322 and Route 222. Motorists are encouraged to view materials in the resources section of the project website to better familiarize themselves with the operation of a DDI including the Example of Diverging Diamond Interchange video for an example of DDI operation at a similar interchange, and the Diverging Diamond – How it Works display for traffic movement details at this specific interchange.
