Baltimore Pike

Project Location Map

Overview

This bridge replacement project is located along SR 97 in Germany Township, Adams County. The purpose of this project is to address structural deficiencies and deterioration of the bridge and provide continued safe and efficient crossing of SR 97 (Baltimore Pike) over the unnamed tributary to Piney Creek.

The existing structure was built in 1924 and is a single span reinforced concrete slab bridge. The existing bridge span length is 7 ft and the under clearance is approximately 3 ft.

Proposed construction will consist of replacing the existing bridge with a 14 ft by 4.5 ft reinforced concrete box culvert. Additional work includes replacement of an existing retaining wall running along the east side of SR 97 just north of the proposed culvert, guide rail improvements, pavement and shoulder reconstruction, approach paving, and rock scour protection around the culvert. The pavement within the limits of guide rail will also be overlaid. The replacement structure will be slightly widened to provide two 11 ft travel lanes and 4 ft shoulders.

This section of SR 97 (Baltimore Pike) has an average daily traffic volume of 6,933 vehicles per day.

The bridge is expected to be closed for approximately 4 months to all traffic during construction. The proposed detour is approximately 9.9 miles in length and utilizes SR 194 (E King Street), SR 2025 (Pine Grove Road) and crossing into Maryland on Old Hanover Road. Access to all driveways and adjacent roads within the project limits will be maintained during construction. Overhead utilities are present at the site and utility relocations will be necessary to accommodate construction.

The project is currently in design, and the construction work is anticipated to begin in Fall 2023 and last approximately 10 months.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.

In accordance with Governor Wolf's COVID-19 mitigation efforts, this plans display will be held online only. A digital version of the information will be available to view online for 30 days.
