Work is part of East Shore Section 3 of I-83 Capital Beltway Project

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the 29th Street bridge spanning Interstate 83 near Harrisburg is scheduled to be closed for replacement. Weather permitting, the bridge will be closed the night of Monday, July 8. It is expected to remain closed until November 12, 2025.

Truck, car and pedestrian detours will be in place during this long-term closure. Cars will use Derry Street, 19th Street and Paxton Street. Trucks will use Derry Street, Eisenhower Boulevard and Paxton Street.

The detour for pedestrians will use Derry Street, S. Paxtang Avenue/City Park Drive, Parkview Lane, 32nd Street and Sycamore Street.

Night work will begin Sunday night, July 14. The contractor will remove the beams and deck on the section of bridge that spans Norfolk Southern railroad tracks. There will be lane closures in both directions of I-83 in the area of 29th Street. This work is expected to take two-to-three weeks to complete.

This work is associated with the first of two contracts for East Shore Section 3 of the larger I-83 Capital Beltway Project. There may be significant impacts to traffic during the life of this project, including traffic shifts, lane restrictions and road closures/detours. Advance notice will be issued prior to any major traffic impacts.

New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc., of New Enterprise, PA, is the contractor on this $154,627,000 project.

All work on this contract is expected to be completed by October 12, 2027.
