Major Bridge Preservation Project to Resume on I-81 and Route 22 in Dauphin County

03/22/2023

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that a major bridge preservation project is set to resume next week on multiple bridges and ramps on Interstate 81 and Route 22 in the City of Harrisburg and Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County.

Beginning Monday, March 27, the contractor will begin stage 2 of the project. This work includes painting the bridge carrying traffic from eastbound Route 22/322 to northbound I-81 (Ramp C) and the bridge carrying westbound Route 22/322 over I-81. This work will be performed daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The contractor will also replace expansion bearings on abutments of the bridge carrying westbound Route 22/322 over I-81, which will consist of jacking the superstructure, performing concrete repairs of the pedestals, and placing new bearings.

The contractor will then perform concrete deck rehabilitation on the bridges carrying traffic on eastbound and westbound Route 22/322 over I-81 and Ramp C. This work consists of scarification, hydro demolition and latex overlay as well as replacement of expansion dams at both abutments of the bridge over I-81.

The contractor will continue with concrete repairs to the substructure of bridges that were started last year and installation of new sign structures on both northbound and southbound I-81 and eastbound and westbound Route 22/322.

Any traffic impacts will occur at night. Updated releases will be issued in advance of the impacts.

This work is part of a project that includes bridge preservation work, approach pavement work, sign and sign structure replacements, and other miscellaneous construction on I-81 from Progress Avenue in the City of Harrisburg to the Susquehanna River at the George N. Wade Bridge in Susquehanna Township, and on Route 22 from Elmerton Avenue to about 0.5 miles north of I-81 in the city.

Deblin, Inc., of Mechanicsburg, PA, is the prime contractor on this $9,884,046 project. This project is expected to be completed by October 27, 2023.
