Overnight Rolling Stops Planned for WB Route 22/322 in Dauphin County

03/24/2023

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that overnight rolling stops are planned on westbound Route 22/322 from Elmerton Avenue to Interstate 81 in Dauphin County.

Weather permitting, rolling stops of up to 15 minutes will be in place on westbound Route 22/322 from midnight to 5:00 AM Tuesday, April 4. The stoppages will allow a contractor to jack up the bridge spanning I-81 so the bridge bearings can be replaced.

Travelers are reminded to be alert for these operations, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones for their safety as well as for the safety of the road crews.

This work is part of a project that includes bridge preservation work, approach pavement work, sign and sign structure replacements, and other miscellaneous construction on I-81 from Progress Avenue in the City of Harrisburg to the Susquehanna River at the George N. Wade Bridge in Susquehanna Township, and on Route 22 from Elmerton Avenue to about 0.5 miles north of I-81 in the city.

This project began last spring. Work resumes next week and in addition to replacing the bearings on the westbound Route 22/322 bridge over I-81, includes painting the bridge carrying traffic from eastbound Route 22/322 to northbound I-81 (Ramp C) and the bridge carrying westbound Route 22/322 over I-81. This work will be performed daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The contractor will then perform concrete deck rehabilitation on the bridges carrying traffic on eastbound and westbound Route 22/322 over I-81 and Ramp C. This work consists of scarification, hydro demolition and latex overlay as well as replacement of expansion dams at both abutments of the bridge over I-81.

The contractor will continue with concrete repairs to the substructure of bridges that were started last year and installation of new sign structures on both northbound and southbound I-81 and eastbound and westbound Route 22/322.

Any traffic impacts will occur at night. Updated releases will be issued in advance of the impacts.

Deblin, Inc., of Mechanicsburg, PA, is the prime contractor on this $9,884,046 project. This project is expected to be completed by October 27, 2023.
