NB I-81 Welcome Center in Franklin County to Open by 7:00 PM Today

Energy efficient HVAC upgrades made

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today the northbound Interstate 81 Welcome Center in Franklin County is expected to reopen by 7:00 PM today, Friday, June 7.

The Welcome Center was closed Monday so the facility’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system could be replaced with an energy efficient system.

This work is a Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) project, initiated by PennDOT and the Department of General Services in 2021. GESA projects upgrade heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting systems to improve energy efficiency in buildings and decrease growing energy costs. These upgrades significantly reduce energy usage which result in decreased utility spending.
