​Indiana, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is announcing an upcoming overnight detour on Interstate 79 Northbound and Southbound in Muddy Creek Township, Butler County as crews erect bridge beams for the new Portersville Bridge.

Beginning at 8:00 PM on May 15 and nightly through May 20, crews from J.F. Shea Construction, Inc. of Mt. Pleasant, PA, will be erecting bridge beams with overnight work until 6:00 AM May 20. During this time, traffic on State Route 488 will be reduced to a single lane with flagging during operations.  Following the May 15 through 20 detour, two-lane traffic on State Route 488 will resume. 

To detour, motorists travelling north on Interstate 79 should exit at the Exit 96 off-ramp and then get back onto Interstate 79 via the Northbound on-ramp.  Southbound, motorists should take Exit 99 to U.S. Route 422 Westbound to U.S. Route 19 Southbound to State Route 488 Eastbound to Interstate 79 Southbound.

Work is weather dependent. 

The anticipated completion date for this $6.3 million bridge replacement project is June 2024. The existing bridge will be replaced with a two-span, steel bridge.
