Liberty Tunnel Overnight Inspections Begin Sunday Night in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is announcing inspection activities in Liberty Tunnel (Route 3069) in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will begin Sunday night, April 23 weather permitting.

Overnight tunnel closures will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. for tunnel inspection and survey work according to the following schedule: 

  • Sunday night, April 23 – Inbound (northbound)

  • Monday night, April 24 – Inbound (northbound)

  • Tuesday night, April 25 – Inbound (northbound)

  • Wednesday night, April 26 – Outbound (southbound) – Work will begin one hour after the end of the Pirate game

  • Thursday night, April 27 – Outbound (southbound)

  • Friday and Sunday nights, April 28-29 – No work

  • Sunday night, April 30 - Outbound (southbound)

  • Monday night, May 1 – Outbound (southbound)

  • Tuesday night, May 2 – Inbound (northbound)

Traffic will be detoured during the inspections.

Posted Detour

Outbound (southbound)

  • Turn right onto PJ McArdle Roadway

  • Continue straight onto Merrimac Street

  • Turn right onto Woodruff Street

  • Follow Woodruff Street to Route 51/19 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard)

  • Turn left onto Route 51/19 and follow back to Route 19 (West Liberty Avenue)

  • End detour

Alternate outbound (southbound) route

  • Use the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel or West End Circle to Route 51

Inbound (northbound)

  • Take Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard) northbound

  • Take the left exit to I-376 West/US 19 South toward Carnegie/Airport/West End

  • Take Exit 69A toward US 19 South/Banksville Road

  • Keep left (towards South Truck 19/51) and loop back to I-376 eastbound toward Fort Pitt Tunnel

  • Follow eastbound I-376 through Fort Pitt Tunnel and across the Fort Pitt Bridge

  • For access to I-279 destinations follow I-279 signage, all other destinations take exit toward I-376 East/Monroeville

  • Take the left exit 71A to Grant Street

  • Turn left onto Grant Street

  • End detour

Additional overnight closures are anticipated but have not been scheduled. Details will be provided in advance of any future closings.

Police will assist with traffic control at the signalized intersections outside of the tunnel entrances.

Crews from Gannett Fleming, Inc., will conduct the inspection work.
