Walnut Pedestrian Bridge, Rotunda Demolition Begins November 27 Under I-95 CAP Project in Penn's Landing

11/16/2023

King of Prussia, PA The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that demolition activities will begin on Monday, November 27, on the Rotunda and Walnut Street pedestrian bridge over Interstate 95 and Columbus Boulevard under the $329 million I-95/CAP project to replace, expand, and improve the existing covered section of I-95 and improve multi-modal connections between Center City Philadelphia and the Delaware River waterfront.

The Rotunda, the staircase and platform located in the right-of-way east of Columbus Boulevard at the eastern terminus of the pedestrian bridge, will be demolished first, followed by the pedestrian bridge over I-95 and Columbus Boulevard.

No travel restrictions will be in place on Columbus Boulevard or I-95 during the initial stages of demotion at the Rotunda. Subsequent demolition activities on the Walnut Street pedestrian bridge will require daytime lane closures on Columbus Boulevard and off-peak and overnight lane closures and detours on I-95.

The Rotunda and bridge demolition over Columbus Boulevard will take place during the day, while work to remove the section over I-95 will take place overnight during off-peak travel times.

Weather permitting, the demolition over Columbus Boulevard is scheduled to be completed by mid-December. Work to remove the structure over I-95 and its associated ramps is scheduled to be completed by late January 2024.
