PennDOT Announces Plans Display for McKinley Avenue Bridge Project in Mercer Borough, Mercer County

03/19/2024

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to view the online plans display for a project to replace the bridge that carries McKinley Avenue over Munnell Run in Mercer Borough, Mercer County.

The project will include replacing the existing bridge with a proposed steel I-beam girder with a reinforced concrete deck. Work will also include a new concrete sidewalk on the west side of the roadway to facilitate pedestrian traffic.

Work is expected to occur in two phases during the 2025 construction season to allow for the roadway to remain open during the construction process. Phase 1 includes replacement of the east side of the bridge and Phase 2 involves replacement of the west side of the bridge and construction of a new sidewalk.

Traffic will be controlled by use of concrete barriers and flaggers, when necessary.

The existing I-beam stringer bridge was built in 1972. It is classified as poor condition and is limited to one lane traffic. Approximately 300 vehicles a day use the bridge, on average. It is owned by Mercer Borough.

The plans display for the McKinley Avenue Bridge Replacement Project, which will be held online only, includes a handout, digital plans, and an online comment form. It will be open until April 3, 2024 and can be accessed by visiting the PennDOT District 1 website, www.penndot.pa.gov/District1.

Those unable to access the information online may give feedback by contacting PennDOT Project Manager Kyle M. Barker at kybarker@pa.gov or 814-678-7166.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project. It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the project's potential effect upon Cultural Resources pursuant to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's 36 CFR Part 800 regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
