PennDOT Announces Plans Display for East State Street Improvement Project in City of Sharon, Mercer County

04/22/2024

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to view the online plans display for a multimodal project along Route 518 (East State Street) in the City of Sharon, Mercer County.

Improvements will be made on East State Street from North Sharpsville Avenue to North Oakland Avenue, as well as a small portion of Pine Street. The project is being funded through a federal Surface Transportation Urban Grant awarded to the City of Sharon in 2022.

The proposed pedestrian improvements will include replacement of existing curb and sidewalk, updating the curb ramps to be ADA compliant, and planting of appropriate trees and landscaping. The project also includes the installation of additional drainage infrastructure on both sides of the roadway to control flooding during rain events.

Work is expected to take place during the 2024 and 2025 construction seasons.

Portions of the work will require pedestrian detours. No detours are expected for motorized traffic, but drivers may encounter lane restrictions and traffic controlled by flaggers. Access to businesses will be maintained throughout the project.

The plans display for the East State Street Improvement Project, which will be held online only, includes a handout, digital plans, and an online comment form. It will be open until May 6, 2024 and can be accessed by visiting the PennDOT District 1 website, www.penndot.pa.gov/District1 under the Design and Construction Projects link.

Those unable to access the information online may give feedback by contacting PennDOT Project Manager Kyle Barker at kybarker@pa.gov or 814-678-7166.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project. It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the project's potential effect upon Cultural Resources pursuant to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's 36 CFR Part 800 regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

The project documents will be made available in alternative languages or formats if requested. If you need translation/interpretation services or have special needs or have special concerns that require individual attention, contact Kyle Barker, PennDOT Project Manager, at kybarker@pa.gov or 814-678-7166.
