Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is
announcing that after rapid response and repair all three lanes of northbound
Route 28 in Harmar Township, Allegheny County, have fully reopened to traffic
ahead of schedule.
As a safety
precaution, PennDOT closed northbound Route 28 between the Harmar/I-76/Route
910 (Exit 11) and the Cheswick/Springdale (Exit 12) interchanges early Friday
morning as stones fell from an overhead railroad bridge onto the roadway.
Bridge inspectors were immediately dispatched to the scene to evaluate the
condition of the structure and determined there are no structural concerns. A
plan was put into place to add shoring to the underside of the structure to
prevent material from falling on the roadway until a permanent repair can be
implemented.
The shoring operations
began at 9:30 a.m. and crews were able to reopen the roadway to unobstructed
traffic by 12:30 p.m. Friday. As a precaution, shoring will be added over the
southbound lanes early next week. Additional information including lane restrictions
will be provided in advance of the work.
