Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is
announcing northbound Freeport Road (Route 1001) under the New Kensington
Bridge in East Deer Township, Allegheny County will close to traffic Monday,
April 15 weather permitting.
Northbound Freeport
Road under the New Kensington Bridge will close to traffic beginning at 9 a.m.
Monday morning continuously through late June to allow crews to conduct
structure painting, fence replacement, and other miscellaneous construction
activities. Motorists on northbound Freeport Road will use the ramp to the New
Kensington Bridge to continue northbound on Freeport Road. Traffic on
southbound Freeport Road will not be impacted.
As a reminder, no
trucks are permitted on the bridge.
This $24.59 million
New Kensington / C.L. Schmitt Bridge preservation projects began in March 2023.
The bridge, which spans both East Deer Township, Allegheny County and the City
of New Kensington, Westmoreland County will undergo a latex overlay, several
structural steel repairs, concrete substructure repairs, full painting of the
existing superstructure, expansion dam replacement, installation of new light
poles and luminaries, and minor approach roadway work. As work occurs this
year, motorists can expect a lane width reduction along with flagging
operations within the work zone. The
overall completion date is expected to be in the winter of 2024.
