Route 981 and 819 Roundabout Construction Continues in Westmoreland County

08/03/2023

Uniontown, PA – Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 12 announced today that the intersection of Routes 981 and 819 is scheduled to be controlled by 24-hour flagging operations beginning Sunday, August 6 at 5:00 PM in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County. Route 819 is additionally scheduled to close from Monday, August 7 at 12:00 AM through Friday, August 11 at 9:00 PM. Both events are weather and operational dependent.

The traffic impacts will allow crews from Walsh Construction Company to continue construction of the Route 981/819 roundabout and part of the Route 819 roadway.

Posted detours will be in place for Route 819 utilizing Route 2007 (State Street / Hecla Road), to Route 2010 (Armbrust Hecla Road) to Route 819. Trucks will use Route 31 to Route 119.

This work is part of the $55.2 million Laurel Valley Transportation Improvement Project to upgrade the Route 981 corridor from the intersection with Route 819 in Mount Pleasant Township to the intersection with Route 30 in Unity Township and is broken into three separate projects. The southernmost section will involve reconstruction of Route 981 from the intersection with Route 819 north to a point just south of the town of Calumet. The project is expected to be complete in September 2024.

With flagging operations in place, motorists are asked to use caution while driving through the work zone and allow extra travel time. Safety is everyone's responsibility.
