Route 51 Lane Shifts in Westmoreland County POSTPONED to April 16

04/10/2024

Uniontown, PA – Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 12 is announcing that three traffic pattern modifications are postponed due to this week's weather forecast. They are now scheduled to begin Tuesday, April 16 (previously Thursday, April 11), 7:00 AM, at the Interstate 70 and Route 51 intersection in Rostraver Township, Westmoreland County.

Single-lane traffic will be implemented on Route 51 from McKenery Drive/Snyder Lane to Cobble Lane/Porter Road. Existing northbound lanes will be closed and shifted into the southbound lanes – one lane in each direction. The configuration is anticipated through November.

The existing loop ramp carrying southbound Route 51 to eastbound I-70 will be closed through September. Traffic will be directed southbound to the signal at Finley Road (just before Get Go Café and Market) for a left turn to access eastbound I-70.

The relocated section of Finley Road will open to traffic travelling Finley Road to Route 981, and the existing access to Finley Road will be shutdown.

Ten-feet wide lane restrictions will be in place throughout the Route 51 work zone, and all project timeframes are dependent on weather and operations.

Crews from Golden Triangle Construction will be constructing the new Diverging Diamond Interchange, which includes full depth reconstruction of the roadway, updated drainage, updated lighting and traffic signals, and completion of the westernmost structure carrying Route 51 over I-70.

This work is part of the $120.6 million Interstate 70 Project involving the widening and reconstruction of Interstate 70 along with the reconstruction of the Route 51 Interchange (Exit 46) to replace it with a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). To accommodate the new interchange, the plans include one mile of reconstruction and widening on Route 51, and several intersecting roadways, including the relocation of Finley Road and Route 981. The project is anticipated to be complete in October 2027.
