PennDOT, Police Highlight Work Zone Safety During Aggressive Driving Campaign

04/26/2024

Uniontown, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) partnered with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and Rostraver Township Police Department today to urge work zone safety as part of a statewide Aggressive Driving Enforcement Wave that runs through April 28.

The goal of targeted enforcement is to reduce the number of aggressive driving related crashes, injuries, and fatalities on roadways throughout the state. The enforcement wave focuses on distracted driving, speeding, and work zone awareness.

According to preliminary data from PennDOT, there were 6,610 crashes due to aggressive driving in Pennsylvania in 2023, and 121 of those crashes were fatal.

PennDOT reminds motorists that speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading factors in crashes in work zones in Pennsylvania. In 2023, there were 1,216 work zone crashes statewide which resulted in 22 fatalities, up from 14 in 2022.

“As we continue through spring and move toward summer, drivers will see more work zones during their travels” said PennDOT District 12 Executive Rachel Duda. “Remember to slow down and pay attention, it could save a life.”

If you encounter a work zone, PennDOT offers these tips:

  • Drive the posted work zone speed limit.
  • Stay alert and pay close attention to signs and flaggers.
  • Turn on your headlights if signs instruct you to do so.
  • Maintain a safe distance around vehicles.
  • Use four-way flashers when stopped or traveling slowly.
  • Avoid distractions and give your full attention to the road.
