PennDOT Announces Virtual Public Plans Display for Fifth Street Bridge Project in Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, PA Public Invited to Comment on Proposed Improvements

05/09/2024

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Engineering District 5-0 invites the public to a virtual plans display from May 8, 2024 to June 7, 2024, for the replacement of the Fifth Street Bridge over US 22 in Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, PA.

In its newly constructed state, the project will re-establish a vital transportation corridor to Whitehall Township and restore community connectivity lost with the removal of the previous Fifth Street bridge. The previous bridge was removed in 2017 under a previous US 22 project due to horizontal and vertical clearance issues. The roadway approaches to the south and north of the Fifth Street Bridge will be reconstructed. The reconstructed bridge and approach roadways will include sidewalk on both sides.

PennDOT welcomes community members to view and provide their input on the proposed plans for the Fifth Street Bridge. To access the project documents and comment form, visit www.PennDOT.gov/District5, click on the Public Meetings link under the District Links heading, pick the Lehigh County box, and then choose the Fifth Street Bridge tile. The digital version of the information will be available to view online until June 7, 2024.

Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2028, but additional design work is required before construction schedules or staging plans can be finalized.
