King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that W. Bristol Street and N. 5th Street Intersection will partially reopen on Tuesday, January 2, under an improvement project to remove the 5th Street bridge over the abandoned Conrail line, and reconstruct the roadway between Hunting Park Avenue and Bristol Street in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia.
Sometime after 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 2, PennDOT's contractor will partially reopen the intersection to car traffic only. Drivers heading westbound on Bristol Street will be able to make a right turn at N. 5th Street to travel north on N. 5th Street. Drivers heading southbound on N. 5th Street will be able to make a left turn at Bristol Street to travel east on Bristol Street.
Trucks and buses will continue to use the existing detour while 5th Street construction continues between Hunting Park Avenue and Bristol Street through the completion of the project in spring 2024.
The southbound 5th Street truck and bus detour will direct drivers to turn left on Wyoming Avenue, right on Rising Sun Avenue and right on Hunting Park Avenue. The northbound 5th Street truck and bus detour will direct drivers to turn left on Hunting Park Avenue, right on 6th Street and right on Cayuga Street.
Local access will continue to be maintained up to the closure. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area or on the detour routes because backups and delays will occur.
The 5th Street bridge over the abandoned Conrail line is one of two deteriorating bridges that PennDOT is removing under a $9.1 million project, which is financed with 100% state funds.
Construction was completed in May 2022 to remove the bridge that carried Erie Avenue over an abandoned Conrail line and to rebuild the roadway between 3rd Street and Lawrence Street.
