PennDOT Removes Vehicle and Speed Restrictions on Major Highways in South Central PA

01/06/2024

Harrisburg, PA – PennDOT has lifted vehicle and speed restrictions placed this morning on major highways in south central Pennsylvania District 8 region comprised of Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties.

Due to the winter storm impacting the region, PennDOT temporarily restricted certain vehicles from using Interstate 81 and Interstate 83 Saturday morning to help ensure that the interstates remained open during the most challenging conditions of the winter storm.

The vehicle restrictions reflected Level 1 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan (PDF). The restriction on the entire length of I-83 and on I-81 from the Maryland state line to I-83 has been lifted. The restriction remains in place on I-81 north of I-83. PennDOT has also lifted speed and right-lane-only commercial vehicle restrictions on all roadways in the region.

PennDOT is continuing to treat roadways in the area and will continue until roads are clear.

While PennDOT recommends not traveling during winter storms, motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional X alerts.
