Traffic Signal Upgrades and Other Safety Improvements Along Route 56 at the Route 160 Intersection and 24th Street Intersection Will Start Monday in Windber, Somerset County

11/30/2023

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that a multi-location project to improve roadway safety will begin Monday December 4, 2023, with traffic signal upgrades on Route 56 in Windber, Somerset County, at both the intersection of Route 160 and the intersection of 24th Street.

On Monday, a contractor will start work at the two intersections with short-term lane restrictions managed under daylight flagging operations and arrow boards to control traffic. No delays are expected, but motorists are strongly advised to use caution, drive slowly, and obey all traffic signs and flaggers. They also should drive without distractions and watch for maintenance personnel and vehicles.

Additional work included in this multi-year effort will be application of high friction surface treatment, the creation of centerline rumble strips and new pavement markings at various locations in Bedford, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon, and Somerset Counties.

The $3.4 million project is weather dependent and is expected to continue into 2024.
