PennDOT Issues Update on East Charles Street Resurfacing Project

05/05/2023

Lewistown, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced it reopened the Walnut Street exit along Route 322/22 eastbound at approximately 11:00 AM. PennDOT closed the off-ramp at Walnut Street on May 1 as part of PennDOT's East Charles Street highway resurfacing project in Mifflin County that will improve the ride quality and extend the life of nearly a mile of roadway and several ramps in Lewistown Borough and Derry Township.

Starting Sunday, May 7, the contractor will begin overnight paving operations at the on and off-ramps at Route 22 (Juniata Street) and Route 3002 (East Charles Street). Crews will work 6:00 PM Sunday to 6:00 AM Monday, 6:00 PM Monday to 6:00 AM Tuesday, and 6:00 PM Thursday to 6:00 AM Friday. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern while paving occurs.

Crews will also be working to install ADA-compliant curb ramps along East Charles Street during daylight hours throughout the week. Traffic control in both instances will consist of flaggers in the roadway enforcing an alternating traffic pattern. PennDOT urges drivers to build extra travel time into their schedules, exercise caution, be alert for construction vehicles making sudden stops, obey posted speed limits in all work zones, and always buckle up.

Overall work on this project includes pavement and concrete repair, drainage improvements, pavement markings, guide rail replacement, and miscellaneous items. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $1.1 million job, which PennDOT expects to wrap late in June. All work is weather dependent.
