Alleghenyville Road Bridge over I-176

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announces a Plans Display for a project to replace the State Route 3024/Alleghenyville Road Bridge over Interstate 176 located in Robeson Township, Berks County. 

The existing structure carrying Alleghenyville Road over I-176 was constructed in 1962 and is a two-span, simply supported, composite, kinked 48” x 33” prestressed concrete adjacent box beam bridge and the existing cross section contains eight adjacent box beams. The existing framing plan is kinked to better match the existing horizontal roadway curve across the bridge. The deck has a 2” thick asphalt wearing surface. The existing structure has an overall length of 155’, a curb-to-curb width of 28’-0”, and a minimum vertical underclearance of 14’-10”. The adjacent box beam superstructure bears on two reinforced concrete abutments and one two column bent pier. The deck joint located above the concrete pier is currently actively leaking and causing deterioration to the pier. 

The proposed roadway work will include raising the roadway profile over top the bridge to a maximum of 2’-6” to provide a minimum vertical underclearance of 16’-6” for the proposed bridge over I-176. The increased profile will result in roadway tie-in work on both approaches and slight driveway adjustments. It is anticipated that roadway reconstruction of Alleghenyville Road will extend no further than 150' from the west side of the bridge and no further than 200' from the east side of the bridge. The proposed shoulders on I-176 adjacent to the proposed abutments will be widened to 14’-0” in the vicinity of the bridge. 

The proposed structure is an 84’-6” two-span spread box beam bridge founded on cast-in-place reinforced concrete abutments and a cast-in-place reinforced concrete wall pier. Each span will be 84’-6” for a total bridge length of 169’-0”. The proposed structure will be constructed under a vehicular detour. The bridge will carry two 11’-0” travel lanes, two 5’-0” shoulders and two 45” high by 1’-8¼” wide F-Shape concrete barriers. A protective fence will be placed on both barriers. This results in a curb-to-curb width of 32’-0” and an out-to-out width of 35’-4½”.

Alleghenyville Road currently has an average daily traffic volume of 1,872 vehicles. 

A detour map has been provided, which shows a proposed detour which utilizes Route 10, Route 724, Route 625, and Route 568. Access to driveways within the project limits will be maintained at all times during construction. 

The project is anticipated to be constructed during the summer and fall of 2025. All schedules are subject to change.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project. It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the project's potential effect upon cultural resources pursuant to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's 36 CFR Part 800 regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
