Correction: Work on East Charles Street Project Starts Tomorrow

03/21/2023

Lewistown, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the contractor for its highway resurfacing project on East Charles Street in Mifflin County is starting tomorrow. This project will improve the ride quality and extend the life of nearly a mile of roadway and several ramps in Lewistown Borough and Derry Township.

The contractor intends to remove the guide rail within the work zone starting tomorrow, March 22. This work will feature single-lane closures with flaggers in the roadway providing traffic control. Drivers should anticipate short travel delays.

Work will transition to slope stabilization during the week of March 27. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern during daylight hours while this work takes place. Drivers should anticipate short travel delays. PennDOT urges drivers to exercise caution and to be alert for construction vehicles making sudden stops. Do not follow construction vehicles into the closed lane as they deliver material.

Overall work on this project includes pavement and concrete repair, drainage improvements, pavement markings, guide rail replacement, and miscellaneous items. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $1.1 million job, which PennDOT expects to wrap late in June. All work is weather dependent.

The contractor will implement detours during the later stages of the project. PennDOT will issue an update before the contractor implements any detours.
