Valley Street Resurfacing Project to Start April 3

03/22/2023

Lewistown, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced a start date of Monday, April 3, for a highway resurfacing project on Valley Street in Mifflin County. This project will improve the ride quality on a deteriorated surface and extend the life of nearly a mile of highway between Ort Valley Road and the Five Points intersection in Lewistown Borough and Derry Township.

Traffic control during this phase will consist of flaggers in the roadway enforcing an alternating traffic pattern between the intersections of Oak and Walnut streets during daylight hours. Drivers should anticipate short travel delays and build extra time into their travel schedules. PennDOT urges drivers to exercise caution and to be alert for construction vehicles making sudden stops. PennDOT also warns against following construction vehicles into the closed lane as they deliver material.

Overall work on this project includes roadway reconstruction, building a soldier pile and lagging retaining wall, drainage improvements, installation of sidewalks, curbing and ADA-compliant ramps, pavement markings, and miscellaneous items. Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College, PA, is the contractor on this $5.4 million job, which will carry over into the 2024 construction season. All work is weather dependent.

No detours will be in place during this phase of the project. The contractor anticipates implementing phased detours in mid-May, and PennDOT will issue an update before those detours go into effect.

The contractor for this project is coordinating work with the contractor for the East Charles Street highway resurfacing project on the opposite side of town to minimize traffic impacts on the traveling public. PennDOT will make project information available on a dedicated web page for this pair of projects before the implementation of any detours.
