Shoulder Cutting Operations on Route 322 Postponed to October

08/11/2023

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that Centre County Maintenance crews will postpone shoulder-cutting operations along the two-lane section of Route 322 between Potters Mills and Boalsburg until early October. Shoulder-cutting removes excess material and debris from unpaved shoulders, improves drainage, and allows water to leave the roadway, which lessens the potential for icing conditions that are hazardous to drivers, weaken pavement, and cause the formation of potholes during winter months.

PennDOT initially announced this work for August 7 through August 10 but postponed it to avoid impacting traffic bound for Penn State's Ag Progress Days. It intended to resume work the week of August 14 but rescheduled again due to the Centre Grange Fair and Penn State move-in. PennDOT will issue an update before shoulder-cutting on Route 322 resumes.

Once shoulder-cutting operations resume, flaggers in the roadway will direct through traffic off Route 322 at Sand Mountain Road, and drivers will follow Route 2015 (Sand Mountain Road) to Route 144, Route 144 to Route 45, and Route 45 back to Route 322. Flaggers will permit local traffic access to their homes.

Eastbound traffic driving toward Lewistown will pass through the work zone under flagging conditions. PennDOT urges drivers to build extra time into their travel schedules, obey posted speed limits in this and all work zones, and always buckle up.

Motorists are encouraged to "Know Before They Go" by checking conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website.
