PennDOT Lifting Valley Street Detour Today

10/16/2023

Lewistown, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced it completed paving between Dorcas and Walnut streets and lifted the detour for its Route 1005 (Valley Street) highway resurfacing project in Lewistown Borough and Derry Township, Mifflin County. This project will improve ride quality and extend the life of the roadway between the intersections of Walnut and Dorcas streets.

PennDOT lifted the detour signage this morning. It will finish paving between Walnut and Oak streets on Tuesday, October 17, along with other miscellaneous paving and painting of pavement markings.

Crews will complete roadway patching between Oak Street and Ort Valley Road throughout the week. They will also complete pavement marking and sign installation. PennDOT will complete this work under flagging conditions and urges drivers to exercise caution when traveling through this and all work zones, obey posted speed limits, and always buckle up.

Work for the remainder of this construction season consists of clean-up and miscellaneous punch list items that the contractor will finish under flagging conditions. PennDOT expects traffic impacts to be minimal but advises drivers of the potential for delays. Crews will return this spring to construct a retaining between Central Avenue and Virginia Street and complete milling and paving.

Overall work on this project includes roadway reconstruction, building a soldier pile and lagging retaining wall, drainage improvements, installation of sidewalks, curbing and ADA-compliant ramps, pavement markings, and miscellaneous items. It will improve the ride quality on a deteriorated surface and extend the life of nearly a mile of highway between Ort Valley Road and the Five Points intersection in Lewistown Borough and Derry Township. Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College, PA, is the contractor on this $5.4 million job, which will carry over into the 2024 construction season. All work is weather dependent.
