Resurfacing Project Resumes Next Week on Route 54 in Riverside Borough and Rush Township, Northumberland County

Montoursville, PA – Motorists are advised that a resurfacing project resumes next week on Route 54 in Riverside Borough and Rush Township, Northumberland County.​

On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, the contractor HRI, Inc., will begin placement of approximately 1,000 feet of temporary barrier along the westbound shoulder of Route 54 between Route 4001 (Sunbury Road) in Riverside Borough and Route 2004 (Bowden Road) in Rush Township in preparation for the construction of a retaining wall. Motorists can expect single lane conditions with flagging where work is being performed. Work will be performed each day between the hours of 9:00 PM through 6:00 AM, Sunday through Thursday.

Traffic Shift and Width Restriction

  • Once the barrier is in place, traffic will be shifted away from the barrier.
  • One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction.
  • On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, a 12.2-foot width restriction will be in place. 

HRI, Inc., is the prime contractor for this $2.2 million resurfacing project on Route 54 between Bowden Road and Sunbury Road. Work this year includes shoulder repairs to Route 54, construction of a retaining wall between the roadway and adjacent railroad track, guide rail upgrade, resurfacing between Bowden Road and Sunbury Road, and line painting. In 2023, the contractor completed roadway resurfacing and sidewalk improvements of Sunbury Road in Riverside Borough.

Work on this project is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2024, weather permitting. Motorists should be alert, slow down, and drive with caution through the work zone.
