Dunmore, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to attend a plans display and project presentation to discuss the Interstate 80, Section 353 I-80 EB/WB over Route 93 Bridge Replacement project located in Sugarloaf Township, Luzerne County.

The project plans and pertinent information will be on display on July 18, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Sugarloaf Township Building, 858 Main Street, Sugarloaf, PA 18249. The project will then be presented at the regularly scheduled Sugarloaf Township Board of Supervisors Meeting starting at 6:30 PM that same evening.

The project plans will remain on display at the Township building for approximately two weeks until August 1, 2023. A virtual plans display with digital picture boards and an online comment form will be available to the public from July 18, 2023, to August 18, 2023. It can be accessed by visiting the PennDOT District 4 website at www.penndot.pa.gov/District4, and by clicking on Public Meetings under District Links, selecting the tile for Luzerne County, and then selecting the tile for I-80 over Route 93 Bridge Project.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project, display, and describe how traffic will be maintained during construction, and receive public input regarding the proposed improvements.  Project information flyers and comment forms will be available at the Township office and on the project webpage.

The deadline for submitting official comments is August 18, 2023.

The project consists of the replacement of the Interstate 80 eastbound and westbound bridges over Route 93, in Sugarloaf Township, Luzerne County, PA. The existing bridges are three-span prestressed I-beam bridges with overall structure lengths of 210' (EB) and 202' (WB). The existing structures are in poor condition and do not meet current design standards. The project also includes an extension of acceleration lanes carrying Route 93 northbound to Route 80 westbound and Route 93 southbound to Interstate 80 eastbound, realignment of the Interstate 80 westbound off-ramp to a new, signalized intersection with Route 93 and Old Berwick Road, and pavement reconstruction on Route 93 within the interchange area.

The purpose of the project is to provide a sustainable travel way/crossing which meets current design standards to provide a safe and efficient highway system for motorists.

During construction, overnight lane closures, short-term overnight detours, stop control configurations, and ramp detours are anticipated.

It is anticipated that construction will begin in early 2026.
