Shapiro Administration Highlights 138 Miles Paved, 285 Bridges Rehabilitated, Repaired, or Replaced in the Northeast PennDOT Region During 2023 Construction Season

Dunmore, PA – Today, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 4 Executive Richard N. Roman, P.E. discussed statewide transportation progress and highlighted this year's active and completed projects in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming counties.

"We are excited for the opportunity to highlight some of the important transportation projects we have completed in 2023 and those that will continue into next year," Roman said. "These projects reflect our ongoing dedication to build, maintain, and enhance major and secondary corridors that allow travelers to safely and efficiently travel throughout northeast PA." 

So far this year in the six-county region there were approximately 138 roadway miles paved, 285 bridges rehabilitated, repaired, or replaced by PennDOT and private-industry teams. Additionally, nearly 573 miles were seal-coated to preserve roadway surfaces and nearly 10,000 line miles were painted.

Statewide from January through November, PennDOT improved 6,531 roadway miles, including 2,237 miles of paving. The miles improved has already surpassed the 2022 total of 6,414 miles improved. Through November this year, 587 state and locally-owned bridges were put out for bid to be repaired, replaced, or preserved by PennDOT or industry forces. Additionally, 453 construction contracts for highway, bridge, and other improvement projects were completed statewide through PennDOT's private-sector partners so far this year.

Notable projects completed in 2023 include:
 
Lackawanna County
  • Resurfacing project on Route 307 (Morgan Highway) between Morgan Manor Drive, in South Abington Township, and Washington Road to Route 4024 (Winola Road) in Clarks Summit Borough. Construction will be completed in 2023.
  • Intersection improvement project at the intersection of Route 171 (Main Street) and Route 1003 (Jefferson Street) in Fell Township. Construction will be completed in 2023.
  • Bridge preservation project on Route 4037 in Salem Township, Route 347 in Blakely Borough, and Route 347 in Scott Township. Construction was completed in October 2023.
  • Route 4005 bridge rehabilitation and superstructure replacement project over the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Benton Township. Construction was completed in November 2023.
Luzerne County
  • Interstate 81 bridge preservation project in Hanover Township, Wilkes-Barre Township, and Ashley Borough. Construction was completed in October 2023.
  • Surface improvement project on Route 309 (North Cross Valley Expressway) from I-81 to the Back Mountain Area. Construction was completed in 2023.
  • Bridge preservation project on Route 309 in Wright Township. Construction was completed in October 2023.
  • Surface improvement project on Route 4002 in Salem Township and Route 3009 in Rice Township. Construction was completed in October 2023.
  • Bridge preservation project on Route 4033 in Fairmount Township and Route 4010 in Huntington Township. Construction was completed in November 2023.
  • Culvert replacement project on Route 4016 in Union Township. Construction was completed in November 2023.
  • Bridge replacement project on Route 2035 over I-81 in Pittston Township. Construction was completed in October 2023.
Pike County
  • Resurfacing project on Route 6 (G.A.R Highway) from Route 434 (Shohola Road) to Route 739 and base repair on Route 6 (G.A.R Highway) from Ames Road to White Birch Drive in Palmyra Township. Construction was completed in 2023.
  • Resurfacing project on Route 1013 (Cummins Hill Road) in Westfall Township. Construction was completed in August 2023.
  • Superstructure replacement project on Route 2001 (Milford Road) in Delaware Township. Construction was completed in November 2023.
Susquehanna County
  • Resurfacing of 28 miles including guide rail, drainage, pavement markings, and line painting on Route 29 from Lemon Township in Wyoming County to the New York state line. Completed in 2023.  
  • Resurfacing project on Route 858 in various municipalities. Construction was completed in November 2023.
  • Replaced three bridges in Jessup Township. Construction was completed in June 2023.
  • Bridge replacement project on Route 167 over Hop Bottom Creek. Construction was completed in April 2023.
Wayne County
  • Culvert replacement project on Route 670 over Cramer Creek in Mount Pleasant Township. Construction was completed in August 2023.
  • Bridge replacement project on Route 2008 over Carley Brook in Honesdale Borough. Construction will be completed in 2023.
Wyoming County
  • Resurfacing project on Route 6 from Stanek Road to Lott Road in Meshoppen Borough and Meshoppen Township. Construction was completed in 2023.
  • Resurfacing project on Route 6 from Stanek Road to the intersection of Route 87 and Route 6 in Washington Township. Construction was completed in 2023.
  • Resurfacing project on Route 11 in Nicholson Borough. Construction was completed in October 2023.

Lackawanna County
  • I-84 over Lackawanna Railroad and Route 435 Bridge Replacement, Roaring Brook Township. Construction will continue into 2026.
  • Casey Highway Concrete Roadway and Bridge Preservation Project in various municipalities. Work will continue into 2024.
  • Bridge replacement project on Route 437 (College Avenue) over Marcomis Creek in La Plume Township. Construction will continue through 2024.
  • Bridge replacement project on Route 6011 (Green Ridge Street) over the Lackawanna River in the city of Scranton. Construction will continue through 2025.
  • Bridge replacement on Route 7302 (Elm Street) over the Lackawanna River in the city of Scranton. Construction will continue through 2024.
Luzerne County
  • Bridge replacement project on Route 309 (Hunter Highway) over Nescopeck Creek in Butler Township. Construction will continue through 2024.
  • Drainage, curb, and sidewalk improvements on North Main Avenue in the city of Pittston. Construction will continue through 2024.
  • Bridge replacement project on Route 309 (Tunkhannock Highway) over Leonard's Creek in Dallas Township. Construction will continue through 2024.
  • Streetscaping project along Route 2002 (Main Street) and Route 3001 (Market Street) in the city of Nanticoke. Construction will continue through 2024.
Pike County
  • Safety improvement project along Route 739 in Blooming Grove. Construction will continue through 2024.
Susquehanna County
  • Bridge replacement project on Route 1009 (Viaduct Street) over Starrucca Creek in Lanesboro Borough. Construction will continue through 2024.
Wayne County
  • Bridge replacement project on Route 590 (Hamlin Highway) over a Branch of Ariel Creek in Salem Township. Construction will continue through 2024.
  • Bridge rehabilitation project on Route 4041 (Rock Lake Road) over Riley Creek in Preston Township. Construction will continue through 2024.
  • Bridge restoration project including superstructure replacement on Route 191 (Twin Rocks Road) in Sterling Township. Construction will continue through 2024.
Wyoming County
  • Bridge preservation project on Route 3003 (Sugar Hollow Road) over a Branch of Bowman's Creek, Eaton Township. Construction will continue through 2024.
